Below are just some of the tasks that we undertake here at Citygate:

Air Conditioning Refresh

Why does your air-con need to be cleaned?

Your air-con can become full of bacteria and fungal contaminations. Having a refresh is an effective and safe treatment that disinfects the evaporator and airducts.

What happens if it isn’t cleaned?

Bacterial build up in the ventilation system not only smells bad, it leads to poorer airflow causing you to breathe in bacteria and allergens potentially causing irritation to your eyes and nose.

Image
Image

How often does it need to be cleaned?

We recommend that your air-conditioning system is refreshed every 12 months to keep it clean and fresh.

What do we do?

Our specially trained technicians give your air-conditioning system an ultrasonic anti-bacterial and odour treatment that eliminates microbial, fungal and bacterial contamination.

Benefits:

  • Any bacteria and unpleasant smells will be removed from the system leaving the air clean and fresh
  • Special offer pricing available for service plan customers or with our fixed price servicing.

Air-Conditioning Service

Why does it need to be serviced?

Over time the Air-Conditioning system will lose some of its gas and, unless it’s replaced, your system will become less able to keep you cool and refreshed.

What happens if it’s not serviced?

The system would continue to lose gas, resulting in the system becoming less efficient, leading to increased fuel consumption. The system would eventually fail leading to replacement parts being required.

Image

How often should it be serviced?

An Air-Conditioning system can lose up to 10% of its gas each year, so a service every 2 years is recommended. Every 12 months you should have a refresh to keep bacteria and nasty odours at bay.

What do we do?

We’ll drain and re-charge the system, check hoses, filters, belts and connections, and make sure the compressor and condenser are working just as they should.

Benefits:

  • Keeps you fresh, alert and safe
  • Maintains the mechanical integrity of the system
  • Our fixed price Air-Conditioning service includes an Air-Conditioning refresh within the price.

Brake Fluid Change

Why does it need to be changed?

Brake fluid must withstand operating temperatures of up to 230°C but over time absorbs water which boils at 100°C. As the water boils, it turns to compressible vapour which means you won’t be able to brake as efficiently.

What happens if it’s not changed?

If too much moisture builds up, the brake fluid can boil while the brakes are being used. This seriously affects braking performance and can cause the braking system to fail. A spongy feel to the brake pedal shows this has started to happen.

Image

How often should it be changed?

Because it absorbs moisture over time, brake fluid must be replaced at year 3 and every 2 years after that irrespective of the mileage.

What do we do?

We check the level and look for leaks. We then drain the system and fill it with brake fluid that meets our high standards. We
test the system and record it in your service book. Old brake fluid is disposed of responsibly.

Benefits:

Peace of mind knowing:

  • You’ll be able to stop effectively
  • You’ll prevent contamination that could lead to a more expensive repair
  • An authorised Volkswagen stamp in your service book

Brake Pads and Discs

Why do brake pads and discs need checking?

When you brake, the circular brake discs that rotates with the wheels are gripped by brake pads, causing the car to slow down. Both the disc and the pads are subject to wear and corrosion, so it’s important that they are checked regularly for your safety.

What happens if they’re not changed?

If your brakes aren’t maintained regularly you won’t be able to brake so efficiently. As well as reduced stopping power, worn or corroded brake parts can cause the car to vibrate and become really noisy.

Image
Image

How often should they be changed?

There’s no set change interval but they should be checked at least once a year. Even if your annual mileage is low your brakes should be checked yearly as they are still subject to corrosion.

What do we do?

We remove the wheels to visually check all the brake parts. We also measure the brake pad wear level. If the pads or discs are worn, corroded or warped we will let you know so we can arrange to replace them.

Benefits:

  • Knowing your brakes are in good working order is essential for peace of mind as well as your safety (and the safety of other road users)

Shock Absorber Replacement

Why do they need to be replaced?

Shock absorbers use hydraulic fluid to dampen the rebound of the suspension springs when you go over a bump or hole. Without shock absorbers your car would bounce around and be hard to control. A good shock absorber also prolongs the life of other suspension parts and drive systems such as the springs and tyres.

What happens if they’re not replaced?

If your shock absorbers fail, your car will be very unstable and difficult to drive. A worn or leaking shock absorber can affect the safety of your braking and handling. No surprise then that they are a legal requirement and checked in your MOT test.

Image
Image

How often should they be replaced?

There is no set change interval but we check them at every service and MOT test to make sure they’re doing their job.

What do we do?

We check for worn and leaking shock absorbers whenever we service your car. If any one isn’t working correctly we advise you to get us to replace it.

Benefits

  • Absorb pressure from bumps making the car comfortable and safe to drive
  • Reduce stress on other mechanical parts and in your car helping them to last longer
  • Prevent wear on the chassis, which can lead to further issues
  • Help you stop in a straight line safely
  • We give a 2 year parts and labour warranty on Volkswagen parts fitted after the manufacturer warranty has expired.

Tyre Replacement

Why do my tyres need checking?

At the right pressure, the compound rubber and scientifically cut tread patterns add to your vehicle’s handling and comfort. Too much wear will affect grip and safety as your car will become harder to handle. Incorrect tyre pressures and/or low, uneven tyre wear will also increase stopping distances in wet conditions.

What happens if I don’t check them?

If your tyre tread is below the legal minimum, your car won’t pass an MOT. Lack of grip will make it harder to stop safely, and you could be fined or get points on your license.

Image
Image

How often do they need to be checked?

It depends on the type of tyre, your mileage, or the kind of driving you do. The legal limit of wear for tyre tread is 1.6mm compared to a new tyre tread of approx 8mm. However the more tread left on the tyre the better, so we would recommend you change them before reaching the legal limit.

What do we do?

We check your tyres for pressure, tread depth and wear of the pattern. If they need replacing we have a range of different options in stock depending on your car and type of driving.

Benefits:

  • When a tyre is worn the stopping distance is increased especially in wet conditions. Fitting good quality tyres will improve grip and stopping time.
  • Whichever Volkswagen model you own we have the matching tyres to hand, Continental, Goodyear, Dunlop, Fulda, Uniroyal and Mabor offering you a wide choice of competitively priced tyres to choose from.

Four Wheel Alignment

Why is it required?

If the wheels aren’t aligned your tyres will wear unevenly and handling will be affected.

What happens if it’s not carried out?

The vehicle may pull to one side, the steering wheel may vibrate and you may constantly have to move your steering wheel to keep your car travelling straight ahead. The steering won’t shake when tracking is out, only when wheels are out of balance.

Image
Image

How often should this be undertaken?

There is no set interval for this job. We would recommend that we test the alignment of your wheels in reaction to the following: An unusual, uneven tyre wear pattern. If you were concerned about an impact that you have had in your Volkswagen (knocks, curbing or hitting pot-holes). Or if you advised us that your car was pulling to one side (not driving straight) or your steering wheel was vibrating excessively.

What do we do?

A highly-skilled technician will employ the likes of lighting boards and mechanical gauges to assess the alignment of all four wheels on private cars of any make or model. From there adjustments will be made before alignment is checked again, until wheels are aligned and tracking straight. The result being better handling, a safer vehicle, and prolonged tyre life. The machine we use has the latest in 4 wheel alignment technology which uses laser alignment for accurate and precise measuring and adjustments.

Benefits:

With the wheel system aligned properly:

  • Bumps are more efficiently absorbed for a smoother ride
  • Fuel economy and road handling are improved
  • You will successfully reduce uneven tyre wear.

Four Wheel Drive Oil Change

Why does it need to be replaced?

Four wheel drive oil operates in a pretty tough environment, the multi-plate clutch wears the oil over time and so it needs replacing to maintain its efficiency. Clean oil ensures that the components within the four wheel drive system are always ready to operate when needed.

What happens if it’s not replaced?

Four wheel drive oil works very hard at maintaining the lubrication of the multi-plate clutch within the Haldex® system. If this oil is left unchanged it becomes dirty and worn out, which means it can’t lubricate the clutch correctly – eventually leading to system failure.

Image
Image

How often should it be replaced?

It is important that the oil in 4 Motion four wheel drive Volkswagens is replaced every 40,000 miles, as this is the maximum mileage limit recommended by Volkswagen.

What do we do?

We remove the oil from the system and replace it with fresh oil of the correct grade to the correct level.

Benefits

  • Improved system response
  • Correct lubrication of system components
  • Prolonged component life expectancy

DSG Transmission Oil and Filter Change

Why does it need to be changed?

Your DSG gearbox is a very sophisticated piece of engineering that needs to be looked after with regular oil changes. The smooth 2-clutch system is computer controlled with very fine engineering tolerances. If the gearbox oil is dirty it will damage the other parts and affect the performance.

What happens if it’s not changed?

Dirty oil can overheat the gearbox or cause the clutches to burnout. This will lead to poor gear selection, loss of drive and transmission failure.

Image

How often should the oil be changed?

The oil should be replaced every 40,000 miles, depending on your vehicle the filter may need to be changed as well. All the gearbox automatic transmission fluid (ATF) Oil needs to be replaced, which is about 7 litres.

What do we do?

We check the gearbox and look for any leaks. We drain the gearbox completely and replace the oil filter* before filling it with high quality gearbox oil that meets Volkswagen approved standards.

Benefits:

By changing the oil at the recommended intervals you will:

  • Save on costly gearbox repairs
  • Improve the performance of your vehicle
  • Keep your warranty valid for any repairs to parts related to the gearbox

Diesel Fuel Filter Replacement

Why does it need to be replaced?

An engine’s fuel filter removes dirt, rust, water and other contaminants from the fuel entering the engine and could become blocked if not serviced.

What happens if it’s not replaced?

Clean fuel is vital for your car’s engine to perform efficiently. Failure to replace the fuel filter when required could lead to a drop in performance, and could mean your car won’t start if it gets severely blocked.

Image
Image

How often should it be replaced?

Your fuel filter needs changing when it reaches the age or mileage limit recommended by Volkswagen. This limit is vehicle dependent so please speak to a Service Advisor at your local Citygate for more information.

Air-Filter Replacement

Why does it need to be replaced?

An engine’s air filter removes dirt and dust particles from the air entering the engine, and just like your vacuum cleaner it needs to be cleaned to maintain its functionality.

What happens if it’s not replaced?

Fresh air is vital for your Volkswagen’s engine to perform efficiently. Failure to replace the air filter when required could lead to a drop in performance as the engine tries to ‘breathe’ through a dirty filter, and could result in your Volkswagen being difficult to start.

Image

Exhaust Replacement

Why does it need to be replaced?

Over time exhaust systems degrade due to their operating condition and working environment. Water in the exhaust gases coupled with road water, salt and dirt attack the metal and cause it to corrode, eventually leading to a leaking exhaust.

What happens if it’s not replaced?

Failure to replace the exhaust when required can lead to excessive noise in the car as well as the possibility of exhaust fumes entering the cabin. You could also be stopped by the police and issued with a fixed penalty notice (usually £30) or a vehicle defect rectification notice; this means you have to fix the fault and provide proof saying that it has been fixed, at a police station.

Image
Image

How often should it be replaced?

Exhausts are checked each time your car’s serviced and MOT’d, but in between services listen out for your exhaust becoming noisy
– a sure sign a leak is developing.

What do we do?

We’ll check the operation of your exhaust system and ensure it’s secured correctly and operating within the required limits. We will also perform an emissions test during every MOT test.

Benefits:

  • Silences engine noise and reduces the amount of emissions entering the atmosphere.
  • Removes combustion by products from the engine and vents them away from the interior of the vehicle
  • We promise to match any like-for-like written quote for service, maintenance and repair using Volkswagen Genuine Parts™ from any garage within 5 miles
  • Our exhausts are covered by a 2 year parts and labour warranty on parts fitted after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired.

Why do bulbs need to be replaced?

Bulbs need changing when they become defective. It’s important that you check the operation of all your bulbs on a regular basis.

What happens if they are not replaced?

As an example, if a headlight is out, then you won’t be able to see the road ahead properly. If a brake light is out then the person following you may not stop in time! You could also be stopped by the police and issued with a fi xed penalty notice (usually £30) or a vehicle defect rectification notice; this means you have to fix the fault and provide proof saying that it has been fixed, at a police station.

Cambelt Change

Why does it need to be changed?

The cambelt is one of the hardest working components in your engine. It’s a rubber-toothed belt that drives major parts of the engine and keeps everything synchronised. Changing it prevents snaps, cracks and tears which in turn minimises the risk of major engine damage.

What happens if it’s not changed?

The belt can go slack, causing it to snap or jump, this can cause severe damage inside the engine. The vehicle will break down and it could cost you several thousand pounds to repair.

Image

How often does it need to be changed?

Your cambelt needs changing when it reaches the age or mileage limit recommended by Volkswagen UK. This is generally every 4 years,
however for higher mileage drivers you may need to change it sooner. We also recommend it’s changed if it is excessively worn, cracked or contaminated with oil.

What do we do?

We strip down the relevant components of the engine and renew the belt and cambelt tensioner. Then we reassemble the engine and road test your vehicle before recording it in your service book.

Benefits: Peace of mind knowing:

  • Excessive wear to your engine and snapping of the belt have been prevented and therefore your engine life is prolonged.
  • We give a 2 year parts and labour warranty on Volkswagen parts fitted after the manufacturer warranty has expired.
Image

Spark Plug Replacement

Why do they need to be replaced?

Spark plugs operate in an extreme environment of high temperatures and high pressures. Over time they degrade and become less efficient.

What happens if they’re not replaced?

A powerful electrical spark is required to ignite the fuel/air mixture in your engine. If a spark plug is in operation too long it becomes less able to ignite this mixture, leading to an inefficient engine and lack of performance. This can lead to increased fuel consumption and potential engine damage.

Image
Image

How often should they be replaced?

Your spark plugs need changing when they reach the age or mileage limit recommended by Volkswagen. This limit is vehicle dependent so please speak to a Service Advisor at your local Volkswagen Authorised Repairer for more information.

What do we do?

We remove the spark plugs from the engine, inspect them (they can tell us a lot about how your engine’s performing) and replace them with new ones.

Benefits:

  • Your Volkswagen will continue to start reliably
  • Optimised engine performance
  • Optimised fuel economy
  • Included in a major service

Wiper Blade Replacement

Why do my wiper blades need replacing?

The correct size of wiper blade for your windscreen is the only way to keep it clear. Blades are made of rubber, so they wear over time and become less effective. You may not notice they are worn, until conditions make it hard to see.

What happens if I don’t replace them?

If the wiper blades don’t make proper contact with the windscreen surface, you’ll get streaky or un-wiped areas, which makes it hard to see. It is also part of your MOT test to have your wiper blades in good condition.

Image
Image

How often do they need to be replaced?

For safety, we recommend you check your wiper blades at least once a year. If your wipers clean your windscreen unevenly leaving smears or patches, it is a good sign that the blades have deteriorated.

What do we do?

We check the wiper blades and if they are worn or broken we will let you know before replacing them for you.

Benefits:

  • The benefit of fitting genuine Volkswagen wiper blades is that they are designed for the vehicle and the curve of the window screen to avoid lifting and/or noise. So you can see clearly even in bad conditions and drive safely
  • We promise to fit wiper blades (average part price less than £16.00) bought from us free of charge.

Constant Velocity (CV) Boot Replacement

Why does it need to be replaced?

The constant velocity (CV) joint transmits gearbox speed evenly to the wheels. Because it spins at high speed it needs to be well lubricated and protected. The CV boot surrounds and protects the CV joint, keeping the lubricating grease in and the moisture and dirt out. If the CV boot is worn or damaged, it will cause the CV joint to become noisy and less effective.

Image
Image

What happens if it’s not replaced?

If the boot is damaged, lubricating grease will be lost. Dirt and water will get into the joint and corrode the internal bearings. The CV joint could fall apart, which would make your vehicle dangerous to drive. It’s also an MOT test requirement that it is in good condition.

How often should the cv boot be replaced?

There’s no set change interval – but we always check the fit and look for splits when your vehicle is serviced or MOT’d.

What do we do?

We check the CV boot is in good condition. If it needs replacing we access the CV joint and then refit a new CV boot, re-greasing the joint at the same time.

Benefits

By replacing the CV boot you will:

  • Satisfy one of the MOT test requirements, keeping you legal and safe
  • Protect the CV joint from failure, giving you a smoother, quieter drive
  • We give a 2 year parts and labour warranty on Volkswagen parts fitted after the manufacturer warranty has expired.

Routine Service

Why does my car need servicing?

Having your car serviced regularly will ensure it stays in peak condition, making sure you get optimum performance and endurance from all components.

What happens if it’s not serviced regularly?

Your car’s reliability and efficiency may be affected. And without a regular check, problems may go unnoticed, resulting in higher repair costs. Also, you don’t get a Volkswagen stamp in your service book, which can affect the price that buyers are willing to pay for your car when you want to sell it.

Image
Image

What do we do?

Volkswagen trained technicians, using specialist tools and technology, carry out the recommended service, tailored to your car. We will replace the filters and lubricants specified and road test your car before recording the service in your service book.

How often does it need to be serviced?

Most Volkswagens: 10,000 miles/12 months.
Longlife Servicing: when service indicator light is on

Benefits:

  • You will have a Volkswagen service history recorded with a Volkswagen stamp in your service book
  • You have peace of mind that your car is in good condition
  • You can pay for your servicing using a Service Plan
